A group of relatives and pals agree to go for a group reading with a mysterious psychic their emotions range from eager anticipation to nervous excitement and in the case of Sasha a poo-poing and putting it all down to hocus pocus entertainment.
Yesod catches their attention with pin point accuracy about their pasts and inner conflicts; however her predictions about the future appear to some baffling and out of sync with the reality they all know. Even sceptic Sasha is thrown off kilter by Yesod’s apparent inability - or was it rather a disguised refusal - to read her.
The session strikes a chord of confusion and self doubt into Lee and Gemma; but was the reading so elliptical for Lianne. Did she read something into it the others have missed? Why does Lianne go asking pertinent questions about her past while alienating herself from the others? Secrets are about to be exposed.
Michelle is overcome with guilt she believes she knows that her own dirty secret lies behind Lianne’s strange behaviour. Confiding in Lee, she reveals all.
But is Michelle’s hunch correct or is the truth so deeply buried in the psyche of one of the other friends that even Yesod could not perceive it.
Seemingly unbreakable friendships are wrecked in a web of deception, lies and infidelity and someone will pay the ultimate price. Nothing is as it seemed and nothing will ever be the same again.

Wow, have just finished reading 'Holly Leaves', for the THIRD time and am about to start again. It is incredibly rare for me to read any book more than once but I just loved this. The author clearly has a great knowledge, understanding and insight of her subject, and also I might add clearly perhaps some experience of the darker side of psychic predictions and readings. The book taps into that primeval sense of 'wondering' and inquisitiveness that helps to form the survival instinct in us all. But is seeking knowledge of our own futures thus far unlived a wonderment too far???...... we all know what killed the cat!!! Can simply that inquiry of the spirit world redefine our destiny???
Lisa J Gordon knows the answer, to this and many other questions.
The trail of the five principal characters is mesmerising; they jump of the page and follow you through your day, you expect to bump into one around the very next corner.... such is their feeling of reality.
Don't miss this book; its special. It will certainly make you sit and think before reading your horoscope; or visiting the little old lady with the crystal ball....

Very different.
As this is written as a play it moved extremely quickly as there is only dialogue and thus no tangents into descriptions of people and places to delay the action.
Working only with the words the characters speak; the author does a remarkable job of conveying the personalities and conflicts of the characters.
This is a skilful bit of writing with an excellent storyline. You will not guess where this is going. The end was somewhat abrupt, but it was an appropriate climax and end given this is a play.
When I first saw the title, Holly Leaves I had no idea what this play was about. As I read each act more layers were revealed. I did like the scene when Lee said to Michelle that the nature of life is that things happen there are no rules really, no right, no wrong, just experiments. People make rules to avoid pain. I find that a rather profound statement . In the context of love affairs someone is bound to get hurt. I would like to say Yesod is a troublemaker but her reading did serve a purpose. I think I know why Sacha 's was unclear but you have to draw your own conclusion by reading it. The topics of love,marriage, domestic violence, an psychic energy is well written. I already love how the Brits speak. It is a delight to read. the subject matter is handled in a truthful, factual way that struck a chord with me.
Lee talks a group of his friends into agreeing to consult a psychic, Yesod, about their futures. Sisters Lianne and Sacha, friends Michelle and Gemma. As they sit and wait, we learn each's philosophy of life and their expectations of what she may or may not reveal to them. Secrets are revealed that change their lives and their relationships will never be the same again. Yesod gives them advice on dealing with their pasts and confronting their fears and mistakes. Each reveals character in their reaction to her words. When she claims a presence is with them, but it doesn't appear to her, most say she's a fake. But one of them saw and talked to the dead person and her life is changed.
So they were right to be apprehensive about seeing the lady. The author does a great job of revealing character without telling us any of it.
A fascinating story that really makes you wonder about the truths you've always been taught. Is there more to the world than your elders knew about and told you? This play will give you pause.
I discovered Lisa Gordon's writing a year ago and I've been waiting for her to publish something new. Holly Leaves is a very different type of read altogether. It's written as a play and can be enjoyed in an hour's time, that is if you only read it once. I am an author so I always pay close attention to character development and I marveled at the way Lisa was able to bring the characters to life through dialogue; no narrative or flashbacks were needed for me to get a true grasp of what made each character tick. Holly Leaves is entertaining and unusual and deals with a subject matter that so many of us are fascinated with, but know so little about - psychic readings. Hey, give this a try, it may just be one of the best one hour readings you've enjoyed in some time. Bravo Lisa!
A well conceived and nicely written story!
Holly Leaves is a play written by Lisa Gordon. It reads very well as a short story which is how I approached it. A group of five friends go to a psychic for a reading. Much like all of us, they each had their own views on the legitimacy of psychics and the accuracy of what they had to say. It was obvious during the reading that feelings experienced by the group ranged from total belief to complete denial. But there was a matter of fate that was discussed and the notion of freewill that could be a factor in how the future would actually turn out for the group of five.
In this play there is tragedy, deceit and lies as well as love, fulfillment and happiness. In such a short time, Gordon hits every emotion we all experience and everything culminates in a way you would never anticipate.
The veracity of the physic world is gently challenged for the reader and the author allows the reader to make their own conclusions. I applaud Gordon for her subtle way of handling such an issue that in no way distracted from the plot.
I recall those Saturday nights when I was younger, with my transistor radio that would have that single earpiece plugged into the radio and then stuffed in my ear while I listened to the weekly episode of Mystery Theater. I can see Holly Leaves as an episode of such a show . . . and it would be great!
